Food is how we remember. Ask anyone about a holiday, a celebration, a person they loved, and somewhere in the answer there's something to eat.

That's the belief behind Rising Above Bakery, and the one I carried everywhere I taught: that food binds us. It brings us together. It makes us happy. I saw it most clearly in a teaching kitchen at a school, where I watched students of every ability, many of whom communicate without spoken words, find their voice through baking. The humming, the singing, the questions — the kitchen came to life, and so did my students. I found my voice there too, and my calling: to build a place that shares the love of baking and a love for humanity, where people of every ability belong and have somewhere that's truly their own.
In 2021, that belief became a bakery. This little book gathers some of our favorite recipes, made by the bakers who are the heart of this place, so you can bake them too. Every copy helps keep our ovens warm and our bakers at the bench.
